19 Feb Average Joe | Arno Mattheus
Our Average Joe for February is Arno Mattheus, or Rooibaard as we call him. The only thing bigger than his awesome beard is his love for people and his passion for coffee.
We chatted to him at Die Koffieman, Durbanville and got to see how he makes his favourite brew.
1.What do you do for a living?
I am Senior Youth and Worship Pastor at Durbanville-Bergsig Church. I have been in worship and youth ministry since 1997. It is such a great privilege to live out my passion and calling. What else can one ask for in life?
2. How did you get into beard growing?
I have always had a goatee or some sort of beard, In 2015 I went to a worship and church conference in the USA and had the privilege to see Crowder, one of the best worship and gospel artist, perform live. He has a proper beard and on my return, I decided to grow it out. Fortunately, my wife is a big fan of me having a beard and it made it so much easier.
3. Do you have any special grooming routines to keep your beard looking so majestic?
Well, I think most people think growing a beard is for the lazy, but a beard is hard work. I ALWAYS use your beard soap to wash my beard with. I am amazed at what a difference it makes. Shampoo and conditioner is a BIG no-no. After a good wash, I give it a towel dry, brush it out and followed by two squirts of your “minty fresh” oil. Use my fingers to get it into my skin and beard and always start from under the beard up and out. I finish it off with a good comb to shape it.
4. We hear you are a coffee expert? How did that come about?
I will rather say that I am a coffee enthusiast than an expert. I never drank coffee, but met Pieter from Boston Coffee. I started to get into the whole coffee thing. When I started doing alternative brewing I got hooked for good. A big influence in my coffee journey is Oswald of Die Koffieman at Church. His love and passion for coffee and teaching people about coffee was a big influence.

5. You are also off on an exciting adventure in March. Tell us more.
We are currently busy with a church plant in Graanendal and as part of the preparation, a group of the core team is going to attend the Love:Nations conference in the UK. We will be joining 80 different church plant team from all over the world to learn from each other and spend time in fellowship. The biggest part of the adventure is trusting God to provide the funds for myself and the team. We are leaving the 14th of March and we still need some funds. People who would like more info about the plant can visit www.mygraanendal.co.za and for info on the UK visit mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org
6. What else interests you apart from your job?
Well, believe it or not, I am a big Pokemon Go player. My wife and I have made such great friends while playing the game. This is so much more than a game, it is about getting to know people and becoming friends. We have a group of high-level players who weekly raid together. I just want to give a big shout out to “The Clique” and our “Queen” who started it!
7. Other hobbies?
I love photography. I do not get to do it as often as I would like but I love the creative process in setting up a shot and trying to tell a story with a picture.
